shutdown notes for week ending November 15th
Economic reports that had been scheduled for release last week included the October Consumer Price Index, the October Producer Price Index, and the October Import-Export Price Index, all from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Retail Sales Report for Octoberand the associated Business Sales and Inventories Report for September, and the September report on Wholesale Trade, Sales and Inventories, all from the Census Bureau…Reports that will be released next week are those that were originally scheduled for the first nine days of October: the Employment Situation Summary for Septemberfrom the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the August report on our International Trade from the Commerce Dept, and the August report on Construction Spending (pdf), and the Full Report on Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories and Orders for August, both from the Census Bureau…since work on those reports was already underway when the shutdown began, completing them shouldn’t pose a problem; however, those reports that may have missed data collection during the shutdown might never be completed accurately….computing the October Consumer Price Index, for example, depends on BLS data collectors visiting stores and service providers to record their prices during October, data which would be impossible to reconstruct a month later…
The major privately issued report released during the week was the Mortgage Monitor for November, which now comes from the Mortgage Technology unit of ICE, and which indicated that 3.42% of all mortgages were delinquent in September, down from the 3.44% of mortgages that were delinquent in August, and down from the 3.48% delinquency rate of September 2024, and that 0.40% of all mortgages were in the foreclosure process in September, up from the 0.38% of mortgages in foreclosure in August, and up from the 0.35% foreclosure rate of September a year ago….the full Mortgage Monitor for November(pdf), which covers September data, is a comprehensive 25 pages of tables and graphics, with explanatory text…
