December job openings and labor turnover, consumer credit, et al

Major economic reports that were scheduled to be released last week included the Employment Situation Summary for January and the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) report for December, both from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and both finally back on schedule …however, because the government was partially shut down on Monday and Tuesday due to a dispute over funding for ICE, the January Employment Situation Summary release was postponed until Wednesday, February 11th, leaving the JOLTS report, delayed until Thursday, the only major release from government agencies this week….however, late on Friday the Fed released the Consumer Credit Report for December , which showed that overall consumer credit, a measure of non-real estate personal debt, increased by a seasonally adjusted $24.0 billion, or at a 5.7% annual rate, as non-revolving credit grew at a 3.2% rate to $3,780.9 billion in December, while revolving credit outstanding grew at a 12.6% rate to $1,328.6 billion….t...

shutdown notes for week ending November 15th

Economic reports that had been scheduled for release last week included the October Consumer Price Index , the October Producer Price Index , and the October Import-Export Price Index , all from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Retail Sales Report for October and the associated Business Sales and Inventories Report for September , and the September report on Wholesale Trade, Sales and Inventories , all from the Census Bureau…Reports that will be released next week are those that were originally scheduled for the first nine days of October: the Employment Situation Summary for September from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the August report on our International Trade from the Commerce Dept, and the August report on Construction Spending (pdf), and the Full Report on Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories and Orders for August , both from the Census Bureau…since work on those reports was already underway when the shutdown began, completing them shouldn’t pose a problem; however, thos...

shutdown reports for week ending November 8

Agency economic reports that were scheduled to be released this week but not completed due to the shutdown included the Employment Situation Summary for October and the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) for September , both from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the three September reports that would typically be released during the first week of November; the Commerce Department’s report on our International Trade for September , the September report on Construction Spending (pdf) and the Full Report on Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories and Orders for September , both from the Census Bureau… The week did see the Consumer Credit Report for September from the Fed, which reports on non-real estate consumer borrowing, and which indicated consumer credit outstanding grew by a seasonally adjusted $13.1 billion in September, or at a 3.1% annual rate, as non-revolving credit grew at an 3.7% rate to $3,745.4 billion, while revolving credit outstanding grew at a 1.5% rat...

shutdown notes for November 1st, et al

Major agency reports that were scheduled for release last week but not completed because of the government shutdown included the 1st estimate of 3rd quarter GDP and the September report on Personal Income and Spending , both from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and the Advance report on durable goods for September and the September report on new home sales , both from the Census bureau…in addition, the Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) for September , a weighted composite index of 85 different economic metrics, could not be completed because it uses source data from other agency reports which had not been completed…As of November 1st, the government has been shut down for a month, so we’ve now missed one each of the monthly agency reports that we’d normally see… the week did see the release of the last two regional Fed manufacturing surveys for October: the Richmond Fed Survey of Manufacturing Activity , covering an area that includes Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, ...

September Consumer Price Index and Existing Home Sales, et al

It appears that the only widely watched report scheduled for last week was the Existing Home Sales Report for September from the National Association of Realtors (NAR), as all the usual end of the month US agency reports are scheduled for next week (and will inevitably be delayed because the data gathering for them has been suspended since October 1st)….however, since the September Consumer Price Index was needed to compute the annual cost of living increase for Social Security, the Bureau of Labor Statistics did bring in a skeleton crew to get that report published, using data which had already been collected by Census Bureau field agents during September, so we also have that….In addition, the week also saw another regional Fed manufacturing survey for October: the Kansas City Fed manufacturing survey , covering western Missouri, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wyoming and northern New Mexico, reported its broadest composite index rose to +6 in October, up from +4 in Septembe...

shutdown notes for October 18th and two Fed manufacturing surveys for October

Major reports that were scheduled to be released this week but postponed due to the shutdown included the September Consumer Price Index and the September Producer Price Index , both from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Retail Sales report for September and the corresponding Business Sales and Inventories report for August , both from the Census Bureau, the report on Industrial production and Capacity Utilization for September from the Fed, and the September report on New Residential Construction from the Census Bureau….however, because the computation of Social Security’s annual cost of living increase is dependent on third quarter prices, the Bureau of Labor Statistics has brought in a crew to work on the September Consumer Price Index , and that report is now scheduled to be released on Friday, October 24th, shutdown or not, to give those agencies who need to compute COLAs the data they need before the annual increases would go into effect starting November 1st… Since the...

government shutdown notes for October 11th; Mortgage Monitor covering August

Economic reports that were scheduled to be released last week but not prepared due to the government shutdown included the August report on our International Trade from the Commerce Dept, and the August report on Wholesale Trade, Sales and Inventories from the Census Bureau…reports scheduled for next week which will be delayed since no one has been working on the details include the September Consumer Price Index and the September Producer Price Index , both from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Retail Sales report for September from the Census Bureau…as of today, the tenth day of the shutdown, i have not yet seen any indication as to when this will end; the Senate has held at least 7 votes on the competing Democrat and Republican proposals to at least temporarily fund government operations, and with voting largely along party lines, neither proposal has come close to getting the 60 votes that the Senate would need to move forward…in fact, not one of the 100 Senators has cha...

August Job Openings and Labor Turnover, Government Shutdown, et al

As i imagine you all know, Congress failed to pass legislation to fund the Federal government for the fiscal year beginning October 1st, halting all government services deemed nonessential beginning on that date, ie, Wednesday of this week.…that meant that the only report released this past week was the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) for August, which was released on Tuesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics…other reports that were scheduled but not released this week included the Employment Situation Summary for September , also from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the August report on Construction Spending (pdf), and the Full Report on Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories and Orders for August , both from the Census Bureau…however, since the Fed is an independent agency, we did see the last regional Fed manufacturing survey for September: the Dallas Fed Texas Manufacturing Outlook Survey , which covers Texas and adjacent western Louisiana and southeastern New...
